Annoyed with the grey background in MS word when copying image from MS Visio ?

Don't know about you, but I was actually annoyed with it!

When you try to copy an image from MS Visio to MS word a grey background appears in the word document. This could be around the border or could be with in the picture depending on how the image is structured. If you want to get rid of this you just need to do this:

In the word document, go to:
1. -> Tools.
2. -> Options.
3. -> View (could be the default tab open).
4. set Field shading to Never or When selected.
5. click ok and the problem is solved!

I tried a google search for this but there was only one immediate site which gave this information. So I wanted to share this with you and I hope this is helpful to you.

  1. The problem is appearing also with office2013 where the option is gone, anyone encountered the problem?

  2. Found it! Right click -> format object -> color -> change from none to white!

  3. Good solution. I found that the grey shading only appears when you paste the image inline to the text. If you change the layout to top and bottom, the shading disappears.

  4. For some newer versions of Word: Double click the image (the top bar should change to "Format"), and then click on Reset Picture. This worked for me, even though I didn't edit the picture in Word beforehand.

  5. In Word 2010, there is a slight variation to the above. From the File tab, click options. Then click advanced and scroll down to "Show document content". In there you will see a pull down adjacent to Field shading. Set it to Never.

  6. I'm using Visio 2016 and Word 2016...tried all recommended actions above and none worked.

    I went into original Visio and change fill option from "Gradient" to "None" (the built-in shape style that looks blank actually has a faint gradient). This solved the issue.

  7. In Visio 2016, to change background of the whole image from grey:
    Similar to 2013, but on the Visio image in Word: Right click > Picture > Colors and Lines > Change colour from None to White.
