Rabies is a viral disease affecting mammals including humans that leads to acute encephalitis (inflammation of brain). The disease is mainly spread through the bite of affected animal (other less probable way is when saliva of the affected animal gets in contact with eyes, mouth, nose or wounds of other animal). The disease attacks the central nervous system. The incubation period of the disease is usually a few months in the humans, depending on the distance the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system. The early symptoms are fever, headache, uneasiness. It later leads to uncontrolled excitement, depression, violent movements, and finally to coma. If untreated at the very early stages of infection, death is inevitable with in days.
All the mammals - dogs, bats, cattle, humans are susceptible to this virus. 90% of human exposure to Rabies is through dogs. Rabies can be prevented through pre-exposure "vaccination" (invented by Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux), although post-exposure treatment is also available (and is preferred to take even if the animal is "vaccinated").
If you feel "why the hell dogs bite us and why it leads to rabies?", this is the answer:
Well, the dog is already affected by Rabies and its central nervous system is not working properly. It is not even under it's control. It behaves mad and can bite you. Now you are affected by Rabies and should behave the same way, but fortunately we have hospitals to join in.
The moral is - All dog bites do not lead to Rabies, except of the dogs affected by Rabies. When a dog bites, either you or the dog can be tested in the lab for Rabies before you take treatment.
